Dr Bertram Ng - Experience and Training in Hair Transplant

Since 2006 our doctor has devoted his career to hair transplant. He learned the Strip and FUE techniques from famous surgeons all over the world.

FUE - Follicular Unit Extraction

Dr Ng learned his FUE technique from 2 distinguished doctors in Europe:

Dr Roland Keleman has a hair transplant clinic in Slovakia offering exclusively FUE. Dr Ng spent 3 weeks in Europe with Dr Keleman learning his personal technique. Under his closed supervision Dr Ng had gained practical and valuable experience.

Dr Jose Lorenzo is regarded as one of the best FUE hair transplant surgeons. His cases were proudly presented in the 2009 and 2010 ISHRS Annual Scientific Meetings. He can perform megasession of more than 3,000 grafts ( 6,000 hairs ) using the smallest 0.7mm punch. Dr Ng visited his Clinic in 2009 to learn the world best FUE technique.

Dr Kelemano  Dr Lorenzo  FUE

Dr Ng practised FUE hair transplant since 2006. He was regarded as one of the FUE pioneers in Hong Kong. He wrote for medical journals and spoke in international conferences. Since 2007 he was frequently invited to demonstrate his technique in Taiwan, Thailand, and China.

Strip - Follicular Unit Strip Excision

Although very popular in Europe, Dr Ng soon realized that FUE cannot meet the needs of local Chinese. In fact Chinese hair is not always suitable for FUE. The other alternative is the Strip technique. WIth the belief that a competent hair transplant surgeon should be able to master both FUE and Strip, he applied to ISHRS for further training. In 2007 he was accepted by the ISHRS Fellowship Program to be trained under Dr Pathomvanich MD in Bangkok.

Dr Damkerng Pathomvanich MD was a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon. He was initially practised in Hawaii and later trained by Dr Blu Stough and Dr Dow Stough in Hair Restoration.
He later returned to Thailand and has been practising hair transplant for the last 20 years. He was appointed by the ISHRS to train a selected group of doctors.
In 2010 he was elected President of the Asian Hair Restoration Society. Recently he was awarded the ISHRS Golden Follicle Award for his great contribution.

Apprenticeship - ISHRS Fellowship Training Program

ISHRS adopted the apprenticeship system in her training program. Each trainee will be allocated to one of the approved center and work under the close supervision of a master surgeon for a minimum of one year. Dr Pathomvanich had a high expectation and demanded the followings from his students :

  Hair Wash
To ensure optimal growth, the scalp should be washed properly before and after hair transplant. Dr Ng had to spend the first 3 weeks learning and practising hair wash for patients.

  Consultation and Hairline Design
Dr Pathomvanich insisted that all consultations must be conducted by doctor. He would allow Dr Ng to first see the patient and design the hairline, and then commented on the treatment plan. Eacg case was discussed before proceding to surgery.

  Graft Dissection
In many hair transplant clinic the doctor just takes out the strip and leave the rest to the assistant. However Dr Pathomvanich believed that the doctor should participate in every step of the procedure. Only them would he be able to train and supervise his own surgical team.
The hair follicle is very fragile. Transecting the root would impair survival. During the first 4 months Dr Ng spend at least 3 hours a day dissecting grafts under the microscope.

  Graft Insertion
Hair follicles have a limited life span when left outside the body, and must be implanted within 6 - 8 hours. Inserting grafts intact and at a reasonable speed is not easy. Dr Ng learned the technique from the head nurse who had been inserting grafts for 20 years. Her "Stick and Place" technique was very useful when packing grafts in high density.

  Megasession
Many patients want to transplant the maximum number of graft in a single procedure to get the best result. Dr Ng assisted Dr Pathomvanich in transplanting on average about 3,000 to 4,000 grafts a day. It was up to 7,000 on several occasions. Together they have transplanted 397 cases involving 904,285 grafts ( 1,669,431 Hair ).

  Follow-Up
A surgeon learn by looking at the result of his/her work. As it takes 6 - 8 months before the transplanted hair starts to grow, the one year training allows Dr Ng the opportunities to follow-up his cases.
Dr Pathomvanich had patients that had hair transplant years ago. They provide evidence that transplanted hair can survive a long long time and give permanent improvement to appearance.

  Managing difficult Cases
Many patients coming to the office had a previous transplant performed by other surgeons. Their donor scalps were tight with less grafts to work with. Sometimes the hairlines were set too low, and the hair planted the wrong angle and direction. Dr Ng was able to pick up the skill and competence from Dr Pathomvanich.
Together they also worked on patients from different ethnic groups; transgender; the very young and very old; Class VI or even VII ...

Research and Publication in Hair Transplant
Every trainee must contribute to the scientific advancement of hair transplant. They must involve in medical research and present result in medical journals and the Annual ISHRS Scientific Meetings.
Dr Ng had completed 5 studies and presented his works in 3 poster exhibits, 9 medical papers, one textbook, and 3 consecutive Annual Meetings. He was addressed as the "Rising Star" by ex-ISHRS President Dr Tony Mangubut and the famous Dr Mario Marzola.

Certificate of Excellence

Over the years Dr Pathomvanich has trained many doctors and fellows. Our doctor was regarded as one of the best students and was awarded a Certificate of Excellence. This is the only one issued for the last 20 years.

Fellow vs Member in ISHRS
ISHRS stands for International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery.
There is minimal requirement to be one of the 700 ISHRS Members. Yet to be a Fellow the surgeon must complete the one year training and fulfill all academic requirement.
Dr Ng is one of the 47 Physicians ever awarded the Fellow title. Read More ...

ABHRS Diplomate
ABHRS stands for American Board of Hair Restoration Surgery.
Normally a surgeon must document proof of three years of experience in private practice of hair restoration surgeries, and perform a minimum of one hundred hair restoration cases before entitled to sit for the Diploma examination.
Dr Ng is the first hair transplant surgeon in Hong Kong, Taiwan, and China ever awarded the Diplomate of ABHRS.
