Hair Loss in Women
Females are frequently subjected to bodily stress in life such as menstruation, child birth, menopause, and dieting. Hair care and hair styling products are used almost daily. All these can affect the hair cycle. Consequently hair loss in women is more complex than in men.
Investigations and doctor consultations are usually required for diagnosis. Fortunately most hair loss are only temporal with or without treatment. However the 4 to 6 months before any sign of reqrowth creates tremendous stress
Top 5 Causes of Hair Loss in Women
The most important challenge is to distinguish between Female Pattern Hair Loss and Telogen effluvium. Both present as diffuse hair loss and can look very much similar. The key features of FPHL are the miniaturization of hair and slow progression.
General Treatment Principles
Obviously treatment depends on the cause of hair loss.

Eliminate causes
If the precipitating or aggravating factors are known, they must first be eliminated. This includes crash diet, smoking, drugs etc.
Supplement
Supplement of protein, vitamins, minerals, trace elements or hormones is only useful when there is a real deficiency. Excessive use would not make hairs more healthy.
Hair Growth Stimulator
Only topical Minoxidil is approved by FDA.
Camouflage
Wig, hairpiece, and hair styling are acceptable measured for women.
Reassurance
In Telogen Effluvium most of the hair will re-grow. All the patient needs may just be a reassurance from the doctor.
Hair Transplant
Overall only 20-30% of female with hair loss are good candidates for hair transplant, usually those with mild to moderate FPHL.
